Mr. Elly Gotz

Elly Gotz is a Holocaust survivor, a retired engineer, a businessman, and a pilot. He shares his story with around 15,000 students a year, which focuses on teaching tolerance and an understanding of the conditions that bring about genocide.

A witness to history

Elly Gotz was born in Kovno (Kaunas), Lithuania, in 1928. He survived the Kovno ghetto and the Kaufering subcamp of Dachau. After the war the Gotz family moved to Norway, then Zimbabwe, before Elly settled in Toronto in 1964.

Flights of Spirit 

On November 7th, 2018, as part of Neuberger Holocaust Education Week, Elly Gotz launched his memoir Flights of Spirit in partnership with the Azrieli Foundation’s Holocaust Survivor Memoirs Program. Renowned Holocaust scholar Dr. Robert Jan van Pelt joined Elly in a discussion about survival, resilience, and hope at the launch.
